An assignment

Below you find a summary of the Greek myth of Icarus.
ICARUS

Icarus' father, Daedalus, a talented, remarkable craftsman, attempted to escape from his exile in the place of Crete, where he and his son were imprisoned at the hands of King Minos, the king for whom he had built the Labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur (half man, half bull). Daedalus, the superior craftsman, was exiled because he gave Minos' daughter, Ariadne, a clew of string in order to help Theseus, the enemy of Minos, survive the Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur.

Daedalus fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son. Before they took off from the island, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea. Overcome by the giddiness that flying lent him, Icarus soared through the sky curiously, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted the wax. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. And so, Icarus fell into the sea in the area which bears his name, the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island southwest of Samos.

The idea is that Icarus "went too far", tried to overcome his métron, which is "a measure or rule, by which anything is measured".

QUESTION: Make a relation between Icarus and one character of the movie Dead Poets Society. Justify your answer, using at least one scene of the movie to support your ideas.

  1. Neil, because Icarus disobeyed his father to follow his dream of flying high in the sky ,just like Neil did (but Neil wanted to be an actor, not to fly), and that disobedience caused his own death.

  2. I think Icarus is related with Neil too. Neil did exactly what his father said him not to do.
His father forced Neil to be what he wanted, a doctor, and he disobeyed mainly in the teather scene, been an actor. In the Greek myth, Daedalus advice his son to be far from the sun, and he disobyed his father too. In both stories, Neil and Icarus died, the first because of his future, and the secound because of his curiosity.

  5. Luiza's answer:

I think Icarus is related to Neil.
Both of them, disobeyed their father for some reason. Daedalus advice his son not to fly very high, but he didn't listen it.
In case of Neil, his father practically obligate him to be a doctor, while he wants to be an actor.
I think that is more in commun between them, than just the fact that both disrespetc their father. Neil and Icarus had mad a choice, not carrying
about the consequences. They act according to their wish. And than suffer the severial consequence, wich was death for both.
But that is a difference, a big one, acctualy. Daedalus didn't obligate his son, any moment. In order to, Neil's father wasnt' carrying about
his opnion. But maybe, just maybe! Neil's father could had done that expecting Neil's happiness, just like Deadelus probably wanted.

  7. I am really sorry. I couldn`t answer before. I was very, very busy. I participated on Mirin and this spent a lot of my time. Futhermore, I worked in a café. I hope you accept my work because I absolutely need this grade.

    Well...
I think is related to Neil.
Neil always liked to dream. When he knew about one show that he could do he fed in his own mind he had to do that. The most important thing here is Icarus and Neil acted accordind their wish. Daedalus didn`t force his son to do what he really wanted. But Mr. Perry forced Neil to be a doctor. Of course, he didn`t want. Both of them, disobeyed their father for some reason. In fact, to really want something they attracted a bad fate for themselves, the death. Neil really want to act. As he knew his father never let him to act. He did everything secret. He wished he fly very high but he couldn`t. Another day at home night he picked up his father`s gun and he killed himself.
